The Walter Munk Foundation for the Oceans needs three more donors willing to give $30,000 each to put four new wave-themed benches in Kellogg Park at La Jolla Shores.

The San Diego Parks and Recreation Department gave the La Jolla-based foundation permission to install the benches, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported. Each bench costs $30,000, bringing the total campaign to $90,000.

One bench is already funded.

The four benches would sit on the east side of the Map of the Grand Canyons of La Jolla, a 2,200-square-foot LithoMosaic featuring more than 100 life-size mosaics of marine creatures. Wave-themed benches already line the west side of the map and the La Jolla Shores boardwalk.

Foundation president Mary Munk said the spot draws scuba divers gearing up for dives and families settling in for a beach day.

"Benches are at a premium at the beach … so we thought it would be nice to have benches there," Munk said.

She said the foundation will purchase and install the benches as soon as all four are paid for, with a goal of finishing by the end of 2026. The city is allowing one or two bronze plaques on each bench to recognize donors or their loved ones.

Once the benches are in place, any leftover funds will support educational events at the mosaic site, including field trips, docent walks and gatherings. The foundation is also raising money for buses to bring people from underserved communities to future Walter Munk Day celebrations. Munk said the foundation's focus is connecting students from underserved areas with the ocean, adding that people cannot care about something they know nothing about.

The foundation, established in 2017 by Walter and Mary Munk, has funded more than $2 million in Kellogg Park improvements, according to its website. Those include the LithoMosaic plaza, a life-sized bronze sculpture of "J.J. the Orphaned Baby Gray Whale" and a Junior Lifeguard-themed playground.

Walter Munk Day is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 3 at Kellogg Park. The event will honor oceanographer Walter Munk and mark the 10th anniversary of the Scripps Center for Marine Archaeology, the 75th anniversary of the Scripps Scientific Diving program and the 50th anniversary of the film "Jaws."
