Junior surfers have until 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 25, to register for the Windansea Surf Club's 34th annual Menehune contest at La Jolla Shores.

The one-day competition is set for Saturday, Oct. 3. The club called it a "final call for junior surfers" in a Facebook post Thursday, Sept. 24, urging families to sign up before spots fill.

As we reported Sept. 8, the contest is open to boys and girls age 16 and younger in shortboard and longboard divisions. A Super Menehune group is open to surfers 7 and under.

Registration is limited and first-come, first-served. Entry costs $80 for the first division and includes an event T-shirt, goodie bag, lunch, prizes, awards and a pre-contest pizza party. A second division for the same surfer costs $40. Late and beach entries, available only if space remains, cost $90 and do not guarantee a shirt or goodie bag.

The club will award $250 educational scholarships to the top winners in eight age group divisions for boys and girls, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune.

A pre-contest pizza party starts at 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 2, where heat times and final age groupings will be posted. Check-in for the first two heats begins at 6:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 3, with heats starting at 7 a.m.

The Menehune dates to 1965, when an 11-year-old girl named Margo Godfrey was crowned Grand Champion at the inaugural event, beating even the older boys on her home turf. Godfrey went on to become a world champion and remains the only repeat winner in contest history, according to the club's history page.

"Make way for the next generation of hot surfers and leaders of the Windansea Surf Club!" Steve Jenner, the club's junior division president, said at that first contest in 1965.

The event draws young competitive surfers and their families from the western states, Hawaii and Baja California. Entry forms and contest details are posted at windanseasurfclub.org.

Every entry requires the current 2026 form and hold-harmless agreement signed by both the participant and a parent or guardian. Registration closes at 8 p.m. Friday.
