The Windansea Surf Club is accepting entries for its annual Menehune junior surf contest, set for Saturday, Oct. 3 at La Jolla Shores. Registration closes Friday, Sept. 25.
The contest offers longboard and shortboard divisions for boys and girls 16 and under, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune. A Super Menehunes division is open to surfers 7 and under. Entry costs $80 per division.
The club will award $250 educational scholarships to winners in the top eight age group divisions for boys and girls.
First held at La Jolla Shores in 1965, the Menehune is one of the longest-running junior surf contests in the country, the Union-Tribune reported. Its inaugural winner, Margot Godfrey (later Oberg), went on to become a world champion. The event draws young competitive surfers and their families from across the western states, Hawaii and Baja California.
The La Jolla-based nonprofit is celebrating 63 years of competition and community service in 2026. Registration is available at windanseasurfclub.org.
