La Jolla High lost 49-42 to University City in a high-scoring regular-season finale on Friday, Oct. 30, at home.
The Vikings finish the year 3-7 overall and 2-3 in league play, good for fourth place, according to MaxPreps. La Jolla dropped three of its last four games to close the season.
The 91 combined points made for a wild night, but the Centurions controlled the game on offense. University City piled up 596 total yards, a season high for the program, according to a MaxPreps recap.
Centurions quarterback Thomas Dietrich threw for 426 yards and three touchdowns with one interception. He also rushed for 30 yards and a score. Running back Deshaun Hille added 133 rushing yards and three touchdowns on the ground.
La Jolla's individual game statistics were not available.
Season context
Head coach Tyler Roach's squad entered the finale navigating a quarterback shuffle. The San Diego Union-Tribune reported Oct. 27 that junior transfer Brody Bukich had reclaimed the starting job after sophomore Ty Tortorice entered concussion protocol in the sixth week of the season. Tortorice had been cleared to return.
"Brody is the starter this week. He's kind of earned that job the last few weeks … the offense has a bit of rhythm right now," Roach told the Union-Tribune before the finale. "We're getting Ty back into the fold now that he's been cleared to play, so we'll have a couple different plans (going into playoffs)."
Despite the loss, the Vikings showed offensive firepower this season. Junior running back Kali Deberry averaged 99.4 rushing yards per game and scored eight total touchdowns. Senior Nicolas Bardaro led the team with 59.8 receiving yards per game and recorded three sacks on defense. Junior linebacker Sean Bannon anchored the defense at 8.2 tackles per game.

After the loss, MaxPreps lists La Jolla at No. 28 in the San Diego Section. The official bracket had not been announced as of Nov. 1. Neither La Jolla nor University City had a future game scheduled on MaxPreps as of that date.
