The Kiwanis Club of La Jolla's 63rd annual First Responders Pancake Breakfast raised approximately $30,000 on Saturday, Aug. 15, with the money split roughly evenly among the community's three first-responder agencies.
San Diego Fire-Rescue, lifeguards and police will each receive about $10,000 in grants from the event, according to lajolla.ca. The funds came from a combination of pancake breakfast ticket sales, raffles, a silent auction, private donations and proceeds from the Kiwanis La Jolla Half Marathon.
The grant money "will go a long way," San Diego Fire-Rescue Chief Robert Logan said at the event.
Large crowds filled the La Jolla Recreation Center at 615 Prospect Drive for the breakfast, which ran from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. The menu featured all-you-can-eat pancakes, sausage, coffee, orange juice and fruit. Coffee and hot cocoa came courtesy of the Flower Pot Cafe in La Jolla.
Beyond the food, the morning included live music from the Harmony Grove Band, emergency vehicle demonstrations, pony rides, face painting and a bounce house. San Diego Police SWAT Officer Taylor Saleen showed off a Bearcat tactical vehicle to adults and children, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported.
Kiwanis volunteer Bob Steck, known as the "Pancake Boss," served flapjacks alongside younger helpers. Volunteers from the National League of Young Men, including Ryan Hassankhani and Charlie Kassar, flipped pancakes and cooked sausage.
The event also debuted new food-service-grade serving tents, and 100% of raffle proceeds went directly to first responders.
"I was really happy to see it all come together in such a positive way," pancake breakfast chair Alexia El Wardani said.
Tickets cost $15 for adults and $5 for children 10 and under in advance, according to the Kiwanis Club. At-the-door prices were $20 and $10, respectively. Kids under 3 got in free.
The Kiwanis Club has not announced a date for the formal grant presentation to the three departments.
