Sixteen large-scale murals are scattered across La Jolla's village, and on Wednesday, Sept. 30, a free guided walking tour will connect the dots.

The Murals of La Jolla program, a project of the Athenaeum Music & Arts Library, has commissioned 53 public artworks on private buildings since 2010. Sixteen are on view today. The next 90-minute guided tour departs from the Athenaeum at 1008 Wall St. at 5:30 p.m. Registration is required, and spots are capped at 35 guests.

The program was initiated by the La Jolla Community Foundation and is now run through the Athenaeum. An Art Advisory Committee made up of the heads of La Jolla's major visual arts organizations selects an international roster of artists to propose site-specific works for privately owned walls. All murals are privately funded.

The first two artworks, by Roy McMakin and Kim MacConnel, were painted directly on their sites. Subsequent pieces have been printed on vinyl and mounted on billboard-like structures, each staying up for a minimum of two years. Current murals on view include works by John Baldessari, Eleanor Antin, Claudia Comte, June Edmonds and Andrea Zittel, among others.

Residents who can't make the Sept. 30 tour can explore on their own. A self-guided tour document and mural map are available at muralsoflajolla.com.
